CRG kart chassis for recreational and competitive karting

The karting bug bites on those first laps! Kids’ karts offer an exciting introduction to a sport where the joy of driving, learning new skills and spending time together go hand in hand. The right kart lets young drivers practise at their own pace and progress from their first track experiences towards competition.

A child’s first kart is chosen based on their size and experience. In addition to age, driving position matters: the child should be able to reach the pedals and steering wheel comfortably. A properly fitted seat helps the driver maintain a secure driving position. At first, they practise setting off, stopping and steering. Racing lines and driving alongside other competitors come as their skills develop.

Puffo offers a compact starting point for the youngest drivers to practise. Its 880 mm wheelbase and frame made from 25 mm chrome-moly steel tubing make for a small-scale package. Braking is handled by a mechanical disc brake with a fixed disc. According to the manufacturer, the package also includes bodywork, an engine, tyres and a seat.

Use of the Puffo depends on the rules and practices of each track and event. Special driving practice events are also organised for the youngest children. For example, the Bemböle Puffo Carnival is aimed at drivers aged 3–6 who are still too young for Cadet races.

Black Mirror takes small-chassis karting to the international level. This FIA-homologated MINI chassis is also suitable for international competition. Its 28 mm chrome-moly steel frame and balanced baseline settings help young drivers find their feel for driving. Hydraulic VEN 12 brakes and magnesium wheels complete a package that suits both aspiring racers and experienced young drivers.

The Cadet and Raket classes offer children a pathway into competition. In Finland, the minimum age for Cadet is six, and for Raket Micro it is eight. Raket95 is aimed at drivers aged 10–15. Each class has its own technical regulations governing engine specification and performance, so moving up to another class may require changes to your equipment. For example, these classes are raced on small-chassis karts with a 950 mm wheelbase at Bemböle practice races. The Puffo’s 880 mm chassis is therefore not directly comparable to the equipment used in these competition classes.

Mini60 is a class for small-chassis racing karts. It uses a 60 cc engine, and in Finland drivers may compete in the calendar year they turn 10. The engine must have a valid AKK approval. When choosing a MINI chassis, consider not only handling but also chassis homologation and the series’ equipment requirements: the model name alone does not determine whether a kart is eligible to race.

Rotax and IAME each offer options for young drivers. In Finland, Rotax Micro MAX is aimed at children aged 8–11, and Mini MAX at those aged 10–13. Both are part of the Rotax 125 MAX engine family, but their performance and equipment depend on the class. IAME Series Finland’s X30 Micro, on the other hand, is for children aged 8–12 and uses a 60 cc WaterSwift engine. Similar class names do not mean the engines or equipment requirements are the same.

Club races and local competitions are a great way to take the first steps into racing. These events offer a supportive environment for learning race starts, flag signals, overtaking and what to expect on race day. They also give more experienced young drivers extra time on track. A great example is the Bemböle Tuesday Tournament, where participants practise race procedures and compete for real. Check the organiser’s rules for details on suitable karts and entry requirements.

The right kart supports your child’s learning at their current skill level. Puffo is a compact option for those first laps, while Black Mirror is designed for drivers moving into small-chassis competitive karting. Explore the models and find the right package for your child’s size, experience and goals — the joy of driving is the perfect starting point for a new hobby!

Choose a chassis to suit your goals and race class. In addition to the model, eligibility depends on the chassis homologation, equipment and current series regulations. With a setup suited to both driver and intended use, you can focus on developing your skills and enjoy every lap.
